Portland restaurateur and chef David Machado made news this week, signing a lease with the owners of the Modera Hotel in downtown Portland. Nel Centro (pronounced Nel CHEN-tro, Italian for 'in the center') will be a full service restaurant and bar with banquet facilities and room service. Machado's vision for his third restaurant is a contemporary, upscale concept based on the rich culinary traditions of the French and Italian Riviera, drawing recipes and dishes principally from the cities of Nice and Genoa.
The restaurant, located at 1408 SW Sixth Avenue, is approximately 4700 square feet and seats 115 patrons in the dining room with room for 30 in the bar. The floor plan features an open kitchen and bar with a dramatic, gas-fired rotisserie and deck oven as its focal point. The food will concentrate on dishes cooked from fresh, local and sustainable ingredients, using classic recipes from the above mentioned regions. The 16 stool bar will feature a full liquor license and the beverage program will concentrate primarily on innovative and creative cocktails, locally made spirits, locally brewed craft beers and a unique wine list from Northern Italy and Southeast France.
Please stay tuned for updates as the Nel Centro blog and restaurant project continue to develop.
