One Sunday in April ~ Nel Centro Tour Sets Hearts a Flutter
April 6, 2009 - How glorious was yesterday in Portland? It was a stunner - an absolutely gorgeous day in Stumptown. So it was that on this sun-filled day, Nel Centro's chef/owner David Machado, gave an extended tour of Nel Centro to a group of friends. Talk about a stunner. White Italian marble tile on the floor and walnut on the walls. More delights to come, in particular the lighting.
Three things stand out: those awesome windows, the overall space and that patio. First the windows; on three sides floor to ceiling windows create a sense of space and light that just do wonderful things to you. The vibe is uplifting and inviting. You're inside but the outside - patio, a buzzing street life - is right there with you. "Cheerfully urban" and "new urbanism" both come to mind. It's open and filled with light and what could be better? The overall space is just very cool - the bar is situated near a wall of windows outside of which has to be the best outside patio in all of Portland. The kitchen is coming along at a pronounced clip. Says David, "this is the biggest kitchen I've ever been involved with. It's a dream kitchen."
The booths are in place - they're huge. They were built on-site and are awaiting the arrival of leather upholstery. We toured the private dining/banquet rooms, the walk-in's (there are three) and then parked ourselves in the sun on the patio after the tour.
Below are more progress shots via the camera of chef/owner David Machado.
